John Hunter Children’s Hospital needs your help in 2010!
Kaleidoscope’s Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at the John Hunter Children’s Hospital is one of the largest in the state. It provides highly skilled care to critically ill newborn babies from all over New South Wales - admitting more than 1,100 each year.
It costs a lot to care for critically ill newborns. Intensive care for a newborn costs $1,500 per day. The highly specialised equipment that is vital in this environment, ranges from $25,000 for a monitor, $80,000 for a ventilator and up to $200,000 for a retrieval crib!
Timely access to this state-of-the-art equipment is often provided thanks to the generosity of our local community.
This year the NICU has approached The John Hunter Hospital Kids Club and Hunter United to help raise funds to purchase four urgently needed Phototherapy Light Systems ($4,000 each).
Did you know about 80% of newborn babies get jaundice?
If not treated, jaundice can cause severe consequences for a baby and their long term development. Phototherapy Lights provide the most effective treatment by changing the chemical that causes jaundice, which the baby then excretes safely through their liver.
